Gone Home

The house is unfamiliar to you, strange and mysterious in its grandeur. Lightning flickers in the windows, the panes shaken by the accompanying thunder, briefly drowning out the constant patter of rain drops on the glass. You approach the door, and on it is a note from your little sister, Sam, warning you from exploring the house too thoroughly. She's gone, and she doesn't want to be found. Thus does Gone Home, a new game by the Fullbright Company begin.

You play as Katie Greenbriar, who is just arriving at her family's new home after traveling in Europe for a year. The year is 1995, and a lot has happened since you left. In search of answers, you ignore Sam's pleas explore the dark hallways of this old, and worn mansion. Clues are presented by examining objects that are scattered about the house: a crumpled note in a waste basket or an audio cassette in a sock drawer begin to unfold what happened in your absence.

The Rumors of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

Mass Effect logo, cropped in Photoshop. Well, I've gone and let the blog wither and die in my absence. Let this be a lesson to you, children (who I hope to jebus don't read this tripe), that when a game you've been anticipating since the release of the first game in 2007 is finally released, you should have a few posts ready to go during your absence.

I didn't do this. Instead, I assured myself that I'd be able to take a short break from the game every few days to write up a few posts. No problem! A week or so later, I've read two more books and not a single word written.

Mass Effect 3 has consumed my life since release, either in multiplayer or in the excellent single-player campaign. This isn't a review, just an excuse. I will write a review when I'm not sitting here wanting to just go back and play the game some more.

So, what we have coming up: two more Sherlock Holmes book reviews (or maybe three if I get back to reading the Adventures of), book two in the Gentlemen Bastards sequence, and a review of Mass Effect 3 (spoiler alert! I like it).

So do no lose hope, gentle readers, the internet ramblings you have come to rely so sorely upon will return soon!

Declaration of Intent

This blog, this new thing that I will attempt to mold and nurture in the coming days, is a bit of an experiment. I'm creating this with the intent of using it as a platform to practice my own writing, be it in the form of book, film, or even television reviews. I may even post excerpts from my own fiction writing, either in an attempt to actually figure out how the hell to write a short story, or maybe just little blurbs from my longer form fiction.

Anything that I write here, if someone somehow comes to read it and finds any sort of error (grammatical, factual, or other), or has some sort of critique that they would like to share, this is the place for that without a doubt. I'm posting things here with the hopes that I can improve my own budding abilities, and that won't happen if I don't get some sort of feedback (online or off), even if it's only my wife reading this (which is likely).

This might even become home to random stories that I find interesting, that may or may not pertain to my writing, to writing or books in general, or what have you. I intend to try to keep this all in a somewhat literary/storytelling space, but knowing my own tendency to become wildly off-topic, that probably will not happen.

We'll just have to discover that as we go.
